Dear Minister Cullen,

I am writing to express my enthusiastic support of the proposal for the expansion of the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park to include the Argenta-Johnsons Landing (AJL) Face.

This 6306 hectare west facing slope stretches from Hamill Creek in the north to Kootenay Joe Creek in the south and is presided over by the highest mountain on Kootenay Lake, Mt. Willet. The importance of these 6306 hectares of low-to-mid elevation forest is manifold, including its ecological value to the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park, its essential contribution to the health and stability of the adjacent communities of Argenta and Johnsons Landing, and its aesthetic importance for the tourist industry of the region.

The AJL Face is utilized by all the large mammal species of the West Kootenay, including deep snow mountain caribou. It provides connectivity for these species from mountaintop to lake shore and also enhances the east-west corridor to Goat Range Provincial Park. Unfortunately, this important region is threatened with logging development by its inclusion in the draft 2023-2028 Forest Stewardship Plan of Cooper Creek Cedar Ltd., woodlands division of Porcupine Wood Products.

This issue needs your urgent attention to avoid irreversible damage. Please help to legislate the perpetual protection of the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face by including it in the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park as soon as possible. Until this is secured, I request a moratorium be placed on all development proposals in this area. I would appreciate a response from you on how you intend to proceed in regard to this issue.

Thank you for your attention,
